About Mariam

My name is Mariam Khan and I am running for Hamden Board of Education. I am a sophomore at Yale University and a proud graduate of the Hamden Public Schools (HPS) system.

I come equipped with thirteen years of lived experience

as a Hamden student, two of which were spent as a

Student Representative on the Hamden Board of Education.

During my term, I worked to uplift the voices of students and families, whether it pertained to diversifying our district calendar or increasing transparency in communication processes.

I believe the Hamden Board of Education is entrusted with the health of students and the Hamden community at large: our entire town flourishes when we invest in our children.

It is clear we are in need of a representative who has

personal experience and investment in this community,

and a genuine passion to creatively address the unprecedented needs of our school community.

In these coming weeks, I hope to show you that I am that

A Vision for HPS

that empowers students, faculty, and our community.

  • A safe COVID-19 reopening plan prioritizing physical/mental health of students and faculty.

  • Increased transparency in Board decisions, and dialogue that centers community voices.

  • Continued funding of students/community programs  and family services.

  • Expanded student representation and mentorship opportunities  across the district.

  • Implementation of equitable practices and celebration of Hamden's rich cultural fabric in classrooms, curriculum, and calendar.

I'm running for Hamden town government on the JAM slate with Justin Farmer and Abdul Osmanu, who are running respectively to be Legislative Councillors for the 5th and 3rd Districts.
